Aw, thanks pal! That means a lot.

As for what, for you, my first instinct is Howl's Moving Castle, but as you mentioned some interest lately in science fiction, you may also enjoy Dogsbody, but it will be harder to find.

Yeah, I enjoy being sneaky if the end result is what makes sense. You'll enjoy Nix, tremendously. It's a wonderful world he's built. As for Megan Whalen Turner - Be still my heart, those books are just all kinds of brilliant. After reading The Thief, I walked around in my Hoboken walk up apartment building, which was pre-war and noisy, trying to replicate his knack for silence. (I'm such a child!)

Oh, I don't want to take this kind of credit. I did the reasonable, smart thing. But it worked because of timing and because DWJ is brilliant.. But thanks Nancy.

In the early 1990's I had all my wisdom teeth out. My sister arrived at my bedside and handed my Dogsbody with instructions to read it. After I inhaled that book my sister kindly raided her small horde of Diana Wynn Jones books and I read them all.
As an elementary teacher my sister loved Diana Wynn Jones books for the way they inspired her students. After I married a British man my sister presented me with a list of DWJ's books. Whenever we visited my in-laws I got as many books off the list as I could.
With the advent of Harry Potter we found that suddenly (I now know thanks to you!) we could find Diana Wynn Jones books in the states. It became a goal to have as many bookstores and libraries stock them as possible. We loaned our own copies of the books to local bookstore managers and librarians and when we could afford it bought copies as gifts to our local libraries.
I can't tell you how grateful I am to you for your efforts! Diana Wynn Jones is a writer for the ages.

Welcome to world of blogging! And a great post to start off with! I believe in instincts and especially applaud having the guts to follow them. Dude - you are sneaky! I like that about you. ;-) I also enjoyed the insights into the ever-evolving book buying world. You've seen it from all sides, haven't you?

MWT's THE THIEF series is right up there with JKR HP for me. LOVED both of those. Susan recommended Sabriel to me and I have it on audio but still need to listen. I also have DWJ's 1st book in the Chrestomanci series in my TBR pile... must find more time in each day....

Great story - thanks for sharing!

Hi Joe,

So excited that you're blogging! This was utterly fascinating to read. I'm ashamed that I don't believe I've ever read Diana Wynne Jones, so I shall have to rectify that quickly. Of her books, which one do you think I should start with?
